Sauropus is a Southeast, Asian perennial vegetable, which is very widespread in the home gardens of tropical Asia. Leaves are tasty and often eaten cooked, even though the younger leaves can be eaten raw and their taste is reminiscent of fresh peas. Sauropus is a shrub which grows vertical branches that can be pruned low , as they become tall and leggy. This is why some people call it Thai Asparagus: just because it sends vertical sprouts each time it is cut back. It likes shade and hot and humid air, in order to grow fast and strong, but it stands months of cooler weather without many problems, so it is cultivated in the coastal Mediterranean with a just bit of protection from frost, wind or hail.
