Ornamental birdnest Philodendron with swollen spongy petioles and flat leaf. Flowers are very attractive too. With age, the short stem will slowly creep on a side and the plant will produce pups. In order to achieve the best shape and colours, this species is better kept in high light and poor draining soil. So it will stays compact, with yellowish colours and the leaf petioles will become very thick and yellow. In turn, when Philodendron martianum is grown in more protected conditions it becomes darker green and much larger, while the leaf bases become proportionally thinner. The same is seen in the wild, as the epiphytic plants are more compact while the ones on the ground are huge and different. It comes from along the southeastern coas of Brazil, from coastal forest on sand to about 900 m asl. The plants we offer are so variable in size, but be sure: our aroids are robust well-rooted plants ... we do not sell freshly-rooted cuttings with one or two leaves!
