Everybody wants one of these palms, but few can afford to grow one to total maturity. Oncosperma palms become the most supreme landscaping specimens, with many tall slender stems and wildly exotic drooping leaves, with thousands of spines. They grow in wet soil so they like to grow on the edge of a huge tropical pond, where they can achieve all their splendour. Anyway, there are many good news for the hobbyist: 1) Oncosperma easily grows in pots. with a mere saucer below. 2) They are slow and they are beautiful since they are young, so they won't outgrow your place in many years. 3) Spines are flexible and rather unharmful. 4) They are not strictly tropical, they grow in the subtropics and will take a cool winter and can survive to the occasional short frost. 5) Oncosperma is easy to grow in general and will also take bad water quality, wind and dry heat, as long as it is kept well watered.
