Beautiful creeping Ficus from cold mountains of So.Asia, uncommon in cultivation. Most of the 850 species in the genus Ficus are tropical trees, and just a few are not tropical and not trees. Ficus tikoua has a northerly distribution, in montane areas of SW. and C. China, NE. India, Laos and N. Vietnam, where it grows in open areas at 400-4000 m. It is a creeping and climbing shrub, rooting from stems, up to 20-30 cm tall, with ornamental deep-green foliage. It is a gigantic-leaved relative of the popular Ficus pumila. "Ti-koua" or ‘‘Di-guo’’ in Chinese, means "fruit from soil", because its small yellow figs grow under the leaves, partially buried. It is hardy to some frost and does well with snow, but it dies at about - 6C. The species is usually evergreen but it typically defoliates in cold or dry spells.
