This shrub is both an ornamental plant and a nutritious vegetable, Abelmoschus manihot has deeply cut palmate leaves and hibiscus-like, light yellow flowers. Both are edible.

It grows to 1-2 meters in height but it can be maintained at a smaller size in a pot. It is often called Aibika, but many different names are used in different countries. It is highly variable as it was domesticated in South Asia and then spread to Papua and the Pacific islands. There are many cultivars with different leaf shapes and growth habits.

This cultivar has bright red leafstalks holding deeply palmate leaves with serrate leaf margins. New foliage is often purplish or copper coloured. It is was spread internationally with this name: Chief Kubo's Prize. The red colour is a nice addition to a shrub which is by itself very lush and attractive.

If your area has warm summers, then you will have fresh "spinaches" throughout the warmer months. Abelmoschus manihot has different medicinal values and it is especially good in cleaning the kidneys.
