Passiflora loefgrenii is one of the most exquisite passion flowers in cultivation It was described in 1997 from the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest, in the State of São Paulo. Its 4 inch wide flowers are suspended at the end of long pedicels, which make a U-turn at the end to gaze upward. The flowers themselves are very showy, with pinkish-purple reflexed petals and sepals which are topped by a dense crown of lavender-blue filaments. At its type locality in Brazil they are pollinated by hermit hummingbirds and large bees. The fruit is edible, but smells like garlic.
