Aechmea ornata 'Nationalis Median'

This variegated clone is just as frost hardy as the wild species but its colour pattern is hypnotic! It is full of perfect yellow stripes, often wider at the center of each leaf. It is a supreme ornamental that can't be missed in any tropical garden far from the tropics, said to be hardy to at least -7 C.

Aechmea ornata is a variable Bromeliad species, appreciated for its ornamental value and its frost-resistance. It is endemic to southern Brazil from Rio de Janeiro State south to Santa Catarina and most specimens resist unscathed to at least -7 C.

This variegated clone is just as hardy as the wild species but its colour pattern is hypnotic! It is full of perfect yellow stripes, often wider at the center of each leaf. It is a supreme ornamental that can't be missed in any tropical garden far from the tropics.

'Nationalis Median' was formerly described as Aechmea ornata var, nationalis, but now it has a cultivar name. If you want to know more, here is the discussion in 2017, when it has been decided to give a cultivar status to the name nationalis and to accommodate the different coloured variegations. This yellow one has been called ‘Nationalis Median’ and the white one is now called ‘Nationalis Marginated’.
