Curious plant nicknamed “Baseball Bat” for the unusual look of its banded tubular leaves, growing from a short underground rhizome. Leaves arch backwards, and are channeled above. Inflorescences appear at soil level and they are quite conspicuous, with large flowers.

It comes from Zimbabwe and Mozambique, where plants in habitat attain 1 m in height. Those cultivated in pots will seldom exceed 50 cm.
