It was described in 1983 as a species but it was considered a natural hybrid during a few years. It belongs to the Neoregelia johannis complex, with thick wide leaves, but markings are much like Neoregelia marmorata.

A gift of nature! This mid-large species from Río de Janerio has showy red and green blotches and a wide water tank. It was described in 1983 as a species but it was considered a natural hybrid during a few years. It belongs to the Neoregelia johannis complex, with thick wide leaves, but markings are much like Neoregelia marmorata. Some specialists also believe it is a subspecies or a particular clone/population of Neoregelia johannis.
