This perennial climber gives fruit similar to tiny cucumbers, turning red when fuly ripe. Not only the fruits but also the young shoots are used throughout Southern Asia, as food and medicine. It is commonly eaten in Indian cuisine and most popular in W Bengala. It thrives in tropical, wet climates where it is also invasive, but it also grows well outdoors in the coastal Mediterranean.
