This is one of the most beautiful variegated bamboos. It is elegant in all its parts as its large, wide leaves are streaked in cream and diffuse pink tones. Leaf bases show those attractive "hairs". It is a running bamboo, but it is not aggressive at all.  With age, it can reach 2,5 m, but it is often kept much lower an it can be easily controlled to stay at just 50-100 cm in height.

Despite its exotic look, this bamboo is hardy to about -18 C... and we grow it here in subtropical Tenerife, in the shade of an avocado tree!

Hibanobambusa is a variegated selection of a natural intergeneric hybrid between a Phyllostachys and a Sasacombining the 2 branches per node of a Phyllostachys with the broad leaves of a Sasa. Some experts say it could be a son of a Phyllostachys nigra 'Henonis' and Sasa veitchii.

According to RHS, "Hibanobambusa is a hybrid bamboo forming a lax clump of slender, erect stems with oblong lance-shaped leaves. 'Shiroshima' is a slowly spreading bamboo with slender canes, and narrowly oblong, yellow-striped leaves to 25cm in length"
