Multi purpose tree native to tropical dry forests in Mexico and Central America. It has been introduced and planted in many countries bordering the Caribbean for many reasons. It is a fast growing, drought resistant tree and a powerful nitrogen-fixer, helping other plants to grow. It is used as a shade tree for growing cocoa , hence its unusual common name in Spanish: "madre de cacao", but also for shading other crops, cattle, and even roads and squares, counting on its ornamental pink flowers. It has different medicinal uses and its grinded seeds have been used for centuries as rat poison.
