Boswellia ovalifoliolata is native to India, but unlike the widespread Indian species Boswellia serrata, this one is restricted to a rather small area: It is endemic to the Tirumala hills, in the Seshachalam hillranges of Palakonda, in the Eastern Ghats. The two species look very different and ovalifoliolata has wide ovate leaflets.

It is found at 250 to 600 m asl. Local tribes collect the resin for medicinal purposes. It is a medium-sized deciduous tree that can easily be trained as a bonsai, when grown in small pots.
