Artocarpus heterophyllus 'Amber' - Jackfruit

The Jackfruit is the largest of all fruits after the pumpkins. It is a sweet and tasty relative of the Breadfruit, an everloved fruit widespread in SE Asie. It is tolerant of light frosts and can be tried outdoors in the warmer Mediterranean with some protection.
Ambers have little latex and fruit quickly when planted from seed.
The flesh colour is deep apricot rather than orange or yellow.

Artocarpus heterophyllus is tolerant of short light frosts and can be tried outdoors in the warmer coastal Mediterranean, with some protection.

It becomes a huge tree but it can be kept small. It can fruit early in life, after 2-4 years, at about 2 m in height.


The Amber variety fetches the highest price in Sydney markets because of its wonderful flavour.
