Small tree in the mallow family which is resistant to drought, wind and seaside conditions. Thespesia is native to coastal S Asia and it was spread to the Pacific Islands by austronesian travellers, about 5000 years ago, because of its usefulness, related to wood and medicines. It makes a perfect shade tree, windbreak or hedge. It also bears abundant hibiscus-like yellow flowers.
