Known as the "White Bird of Paradise", it is the largest of all strelitzias. Strelitzia nicolai is a spectacular plant in the banana family with bold, enormous dark leaves arranged as a fan. It is a woody plant native to subtropical South Africa, where it forms large clumps attaining more than 10 m in height.

Strelitzia nicolai is a classic in Subtropical and Mediterranean gardening as it tolerates long winters and light frosts. It is popularly grown in large pots, because even juvenile leaves attain enormous size and plants can be kept in  containers for many years. Large specimens exist in Italy, Spain and Portugal, planted at in the early XX century. Also here in the Canary Islands some huge trees are grow in parks and villas on the cooler side of the islands.

These plants grow fast and we try offer a size of h= 50-80 cm tall - Cont. 16-20 cm. If the plant is taller than 1 m in total, we will bend or cut the tallest leaves. This plant is fast growing and will soon make new leaves, so it is worth to do it.
