'Castillonii' is a robust clump-forming bamboo, about 4-8 metres tall. Showy yellow canes, quite thick and very straight, with green grooves. Leaves are dark and glossy, up to 15 cm long.

This cultivar is a colourful ornamental plant for the garden, with attractive architectural, exotic shape. New stalks emerge mostly in late spring and grow quite rapidly. It is hardy to frost and evergreen.

The wild forms of Phyllostachys bambusoides are less colourful and much larger. They can reach a height of 15–22 m and a diameter of 10–15 cm. It is one of the preferred bamboo in Asia for building and making furniture.
