Orostachy japonica naturally grows on rocks, on low mountains, along streams. It is variable and widespread in Japan, Korea, Russia and China.

The leaves and stems contain several medically active constituents including fatty acid esters and flavonoids. They are antispasmodic and cytotoxic. According to "Medicinal Plants in the Republic of Korea", in that country they are used in the treatment of cancer, gingivitis and metritis.

Cultivation

Orostachys japonica needs well drained soil. It takes occasional droughts but it does not really need a long dry season.
