Wild banana tree native to the limestone hills close to Bau, in Sarawak with slender pseudostems and ornamental lush foliage. Mature clumps are particularly attractive, because they keep many slender "trees" that will happily live together without too much overcrowding. Pseudostems are tinged brown-reddish, especially at the base, and spotted.

Musa bauensis is a medium sized tree, reaching 3,5-5 m tall at maturity. The inflorescence in our plants has a very slender "bud" with bracts streaked in different shades of purple. After blooming, it will produce small, unedible, seedy bananas with typical banana scent.

Musa bauensis is easy in cultivation and despite its equatorial origin, it grows perfectly here in our fields, with winter night temperatures of 9 -14 C. We wonder why it takes so well our cool winters if Bau is at sea level, with no remarkable mountain chains except the low limestone hills where this Musa grows.
