It is native to New Zealand and rhizomes are edible after cooking, so it was widely used by Maoris as a food and medicine. Leaves have some glaucous wax and it likes a rather dry or drained position. It also takes well light short frosts. In turn, heavy frost will burn all leaves but it can still come back from the rhizomes..
