The Canary Islands are a paradise for exotic fruits and we offer the largest selection in Europe of tropical fruit trees. Canarius ships many cultivars of mango, papaya, lychee and sugar cane; and also the more uncommon species such as carambola, longan, noni and the real cacao tree. Only the best varieties are propagated and grafted onto stronger rootstocks. Tropical fruit trees do better in warm areas but many will also thrive in mediterranean climates, where mango, avocado and lychee can survive light frosts and fruit regularly.
In this section we gathered those plants that are said to have a positive effect on health. These species belong to different plant families and different areas of the world. The diversity of human culture has learnt to live with the diversity of plants and some species became therapeutical or medicinal. Some, like Aloe vera grow in sunny and dry conditions and can live in a small pot. Some others will become large trees and need space and time to grow. Remember to be careful, not all these plants are edible, some are toxic if eaten or applied to the skin.
Holy basil is widespread in India and countries of SE Asia. It is a small leaved perennial shrublet, with a basil-mint flavour, used in as a herb in asian cuisine and also medicinally as an "adaptogen". It is said that eating one leaf a day helps for a healthier life.
This is a Canarian variety of the famous prickly pear or tuna fruit, with yellow-green fruits. It is a shrub-cactus from Mexico that produces delicious fruits and it is hardy to about -6 C (21 F). Hardiness is substantially increased as long as full sun and drainage are provided.
It is not truly spineless, but it has very few spines. It is a large, robust selection with red juicy fruits of good quality.
LARGE, 80-100 cm tall - Tree with edible chestnut-like fruits, native to Tropical America in swampy areas. The swollen trunk helps it to resist seasonal droughts. It can be kept low and grown as a houseplant, just as its relative Pachira glabra, which is often sold with a braided trunk.

"Sweet granadilla" is a high-elevation passion fruit from the Andes. It does well in cool climates and can fruit even in countries with short, cool summers. It does not like frost but it can sprout back from the roots or it can be pruned and protected.
