Tuberous-rooted herbaceous perennial native to Tropical America, from Florida to Argentina - with fleshy green leaves and delicate pink flowers. The English common name Jewels of Opar comes from the small and colourful pink-white-yellow-red fruits.

If Talinum is grown on the hard and harsh side in a small pot with poor soil, then it will slowly grow as a fat stemmed caudiciform. Otherwise people plant it in rich, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade, to use it as an ornamental plant or a medicinal plant.

This species has a plethora of different common names and medicinal uses in the different countries of Latin America. The most consistant uses are as antiscorbutic, wound-healing, diuretic, depurative, emmenagogue, emollient, refrigerant, vulnerary. removes calluses. This plant is also cultivated in Africa and Asia as a vegetable, and in Thailand and China for its medicinal uses.
