Reportedly hardy, medium sized feather palm described in 1996 from high elevation in Bolivia . It is somehow similar to a shorter queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana) but attains just 4-6 m (12-18 ft) in habitat with smaller leaf crowns. Syagrus yungasensis is native to the high elevations of the "Yungas" region in Bolivia, with evenly-distributed rainfall of 1.500-1.800 mm and a clear summer-winter difference in temperature. It was described in 1996 by the Bolivian biologist Monica Moraes but no seeds reached the trade for a few years so this is a relatively new palm to cultivation. So far it is a slow palm at least during its first years, much slower than Syagrus romanzoffiana). Nothing is known about its long-term cold hardiness, but young plants survived -4 C (25 F) with no damage and some are thriving outdoors in Mediterranean Spain and Italy. The size of this plant is: h= 80-100 cm - Cont. 20 cm. |
