Low-growing palm with blue-green palmate leaves, hardy to frost. It is native to open forests in the SE U.S.A., often seen in coastal conditions or among pine trees. "Saw palmetto" thrives in areas subject to disturbance, such as fire or salt spray. Serenoa repens is a low, spreading fan palm with stiff leaves and spiny leaf stems. Branching trunks usually creep along the ground. Leaves are diverse in colour according to their area of origin: they can be yellow-green, blue-green or silvery. It is an easy growing dwarf palm, adaptable to sun or light shade. It is well known for its tolerance to frost. Mature plants survived temperatures below -15 C (5 F)! Anyway it is not the best palm for northern Europe, as it can be just too slow in short, cool summers. Serenoa has an enormous medical interest because modern prostate medicines are produced from its fruits, collected by millions from the wild for the farmaceutical industry. Freshly picked fruits are also eaten for the same purpose. The size of this plant is: h= 20-40 cm - Cont. 12 cm. |
