Large, frost-resistant feather palm, endemic to the Canary Islands. The Canary Island Date Palm is a botanical symbol of the Canaries and an unsurpassed classic tree of mediterranean and subtropical landscaping. Phoenix canariensis is a large, solitary feather palm with a stout brown trunk coated by diamond-shaped leaf bases The crown is rich-green, dense, consistant of 60-100 leaves, being the leafiest of all palms. This species is dioecious, as it has separate sexes on separate specimens, female specimens are especially ornamental because of the showy orange fruit load. Leaf bases are armed with long dangerous spines. It is native to the Canary Islands, where it grows in Mediterranean-like environments, usually at 200-500 m (650-1650 ft) a.s.l. Wild palm groves are exciting places to visit and see hundreds of palms of all sizes thriving in the volcanic landscapes of the islands. This palm left the Canary Islands and conquered the world as it became a popular ornamental tree. Now it is the most popular large palm in all Mediterranean climates, the perfect palm for large spaces. This palm can take cold winters and frosts down to -7 to -10
