A "new" frost hardy feather palm, native to the Andes, succeeding in Mediterranean and warm temperate climates. It is native to the dry and cool interandean sandstone ravines of the mountains of Bolivia to a high altitude of 3500 m (11500 ft). This is the large fruited variety P. torallyi var. torallyi and it reaches larger dimensions as an adult palm. The seeds are very slow to germinate and take 1-3 years.
