Jubaea is a massive frost-resistant pinnate palm, native to Chile, where it grows in dry gullies, valley bottoms and along ridges in scrub. Its large grey trunk attains 30 m (100 ft) in height and 1.3 m (4 ft) in diameter, being the thickest of all palms. Leaves are pinnate, stiff, dull green above and grey underneath. There are century-old specimens throughout Italy and Southern France, as well as in colder climates such as S Switzerland and the Atlantic coast of France. A specimen survived -23 |
