Triple (3 seedlings in 1 pot) specimen of a sought after colourful palm native to New Caledonia, in wet forests of the NE, from sea level to an altitude of 600 m (2000 ft). Cyphophoenix alba has a solitary smooth runk, beautifully ringed, with a whitish waxy covering in the upper section. Upright crown of dark green, leathery, pinnate leaves with bright reddish leaf bases. The crownshaft is very attractive, as it has a shiny white wax merging into reddish brown felt-like tomentum. It is best suited to humid tropical and subtropical climates, but some specimens survived light frosts in Southern California and it could be tried in warmer Mediterranean climates. Cyphophoenix alba was formerly known as Veillonia alba. It is a slow beauty and it is still exceedingly uncommon in cultivation Seeds are seldom available, germination is slow and seedling growth needs patience, but in turn it is very easy and tolerant. Our plants are older than one may think. The size of this plant is: >4 years old, 40-50 cm tall. |
