The "Old Man Palm" is unique for its trunk covered with long, dense fibers, It is a rare, slow species, only known from a small area in W Cuba, where it grows in savannas on serpentine soils. Coccothrinax crinita is a mid.sized solitary palm 5-10 m (16-33 ft)tall. Leaves are fan shaped, dark green above and silvery beneath. Leaf sheaths desintegrate in a number of hairy fibers persisting on the trunk during 20-50 years. Long inflorescences of creamy-white flowers are produced in summer, followed by 2-3 cm (1-2") large pink fruits. This species is one of the hardiest in the genus Coccothrinax, as it can take short, light frosts without damage. Adult flowering specimens exist on the warmer coasts of the Mediterranean. Coccothrinax crinita needs a sunny situation and a well drained soil. It can be grown in large pots. It is very slow during the first years and it gets faster after a while. It is a slow palm, especially during the first years. The little plants sold by Canarius are older than one may think, but they are ready to speed up. The size of this plant is: h= 10-15 cm - Cont. 12 cm - 2 years. |
