A cold resistant, mid-sized Pandanus, native to the Himalayan region of NE India. Pandanus furcatus is native to the Sikkim Himalaya, where it grows on moist and shady steep slopes of ravines and gullies, at an altitude of 300-1.500 m (1.000-3.400 ft). It slowly grows tall as a branched tree, supported by large stilt roots. Crowns hold long, robust, pale-green leaves, finely teethed on the margins. Fruits are sweet and edible. It grows in cooler temperatures and it is able to withstand cool long winters and the occasional light frost. The "Himalayan Screw Pine" was described by William Roxbourgh in 1814, in "Hortus Bengalensis, or a Catalogue of the Plants Growing in the Hounourable East India Company's Botanical Garden at Calcutta.". Almost 200 years passed since then until it was spread in popular horticulture as the cold hardy pandanus. Pandanus furcatus is one of the best species in the genus to try outdoors in cooler climates. Collectors are growing nice specimens in Mediterranean Spain, France and Italy. It is suitable for pot culture. Size is:: h= 60-80 cm - Cont. 20 cm. The size of this plant is: h= 60-80 cm - Cont. 20 cm. |
