Heliconia is a genus of about 200 species known for its quintessentially tropical inflorescences. Heliconias have large, exotic green leaves, and incredibly colourful blooms. They are fast growing plants like Canna or banana trees, often found in wet areas and pollinated by hummingbirds. Many species are sensitive to frost, but a few originate at higher elevations, in colder conditions, and will do well in a warm Mediterranean climate.

Strelitzia is the famous “bird of paradise” flower. It is a genus with five species, and some more varieties or subspecies, all native to South Africa. They are all useful garden ornamentals with bold foliage and showy flowers, widely grown in the Canary Islands. Some are herbaceous low plants and some grow tall woody trunks.
