New cycad described in 2002, from the cool mountains of Northern Thailand, where night freezes at - 5 C occur in winter as well as occasional snowfall. Cycas petrea is known only from a single line of limestone mountains flanking the Phu Kra Dung massif to the east. There it grows on steep limestone cliffs with no soil cover. The trunk attains 2 m (6 ft), leaves are dark green, slightly waxy, held on a long petiole. A strong grower. The size of this plant is: h= 40-60 cm - Stem Base = 6-8 cm. |
