Large and beautiful landscaping bromeliads approx 1 m (3 ft) tall with wide leaves. Aechmea callichroma loves hot and sunny conditions, in fact leaf colour is olive green and turns to intense pink if exposed to full sun. Leaves are moderately spiny and tips are purple-black. It blooms in late summer with 1,6 m (5 ft) tall orange-yellow inflorescences that last about five months. This plant was formerly cultivated under the name Aechmea mulfordi, that corresponds to a different species. Aechmea callichroma is one of the best large bromeliads for sunny areas, often combined with the yellow-orange Aechmea blanchetiana, to achieve magnificent effects.
