Hylocereus purpusii - Pitahaya

Climbing cactus with excellent fruits. Pitahaya is a plant native to the American continent. This fruit has been used since ancient times before the Spanish colonization by American natives. Known as "pitahaya" in the Antilles where the Spanish first saw this fruit and spread this mane to other regions where it was grown. Epiphytic plants with climbing stems, green or bluish coloured. Stems have 2 or 4 ribs with horny and slightly undulating margins and prickles. It bears fruits of red flesh and the skin varies from pink to red. Although fruits had a mild flavour they are appreciated by their refreshing properties. Alike other fruits from the Cactaceae family they have digestive properties. Contains red pigments from the betalain group with antioxidant properties. Nowadays the cultivation is been promoted as a productive option with less hydric requirements compared to other fruit trees, and because of its high profitability.

Pitahaya needs a pollinating mate of a different Hylocereus species, in order to fruit properly. Canarius offers other Pitahaya species.

We offer a cutting of 20-25 cm. It is very easy to root.
