Unusual plant endemic to the NW Mediterranean islands: Corsica, Sardinia and the Balearic Islands. It is the only species in its genus, so it is isolated from the rest of its relatives. Its weird inflorescences smell like rotting meat, attracting carrion-seeking blow flies which act as pollinators. One of a rare group of thermogenic plants, the dead horse arum will also raise its temperature by thermogenesis. Helicodicerus muscivorus usually goes dormant in Summer and it grows in the cooler months.
The drawing of the inflorescence is from wikimedia commons: By Louis van Houtte (1810-1876) - Flore des serres et des jardins de l’Europe, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2690321
