Chaya is a domesticated shrub, from Central America, traditionally used as a vegetable and for medicinal purposes.  This tree spinach was initially spread by the Mayan people and later it also became popular in the Caribbean islands.

Today Chaya is becoming more and more popular because of its healthy nutritional value. It is easy to grow in sunny drained locations, including in large pots.

Chaya leaves have to be boiled before eating. Raw leaves are toxic, bitter and sometimes itchy too!
