A True Cotton Plant

Commonly called tree-cotton, Gossypium arboreum is a perennial species of cotton with beautiful flowers, native to India and neighbouring regions. Tree cotton is a shrub attaining heights of 1-3 m (3-8 ft). Its branches are covered with pubescence and are purplish in colour. Leaves are smooth, meaning the pubescence is lost with age. Beautiful yellow flowers appear througout the warm season. They are similar to hibiscus flowers, as the corolla is a pale yellow on colour, with pink spots, sometimes with a purple centre, and occasionally entirely purple.

The highly ornalmental fruit is a 3 to 4 celled capsule , ovoid or oblong in shape. The seeds within are large and rounded and are covered in long white cotton fibers.

Grow Cotton in Pots

Tree cotton is a large shrub that can easily set flowers and fruits in large pots of 25-30 cm. It can be pruned back to induce new growth once or twice a year, when the plant becomes "leggy".
